Why raised houses here stay wet underneath
The cottages in Freetown-Port Rico, the Saint Streets, and Sterling Grove, and the older raised houses along Bayou Teche in Breaux Bridge, St. Martinville, and New Iberia, sit a foot or two off ground that is flat, low, and close to the water table. How the work is set up
The crawl space is sealed off from the living space above by closing the access and any gaps in the floor, and it goes under negative pressure so cleaning below doesn’t push spores up. We work in respirators and suits. Once the wood is cleaned and the wet material is out, we leave it open to dry — LSU AgCenter says framing should read below 20 percent moisture before anything is closed back up. You get a written report of what came out and why, as Louisiana law requires.
